Here we go! Serif fonts are typefaces composed of lines with their ends embellished with small marks or strokes making them easy to read.

Serifs originated in the Latin Alphabet. Sans Serif fonts are fonts composed of simple lines. They do not have the small embellishments that the Serif fonts do on the end of each character. Some popular sans serif fonts are Helvetica, Avant Garde and Geneva. Hand drawn fonts are a great way to add a little character and charm to your design. Script fonts come in many styles from casual to highly organized and elegant. They are based on the fluid strokes that are created by handwriting.

Script fonts are popularly used for formal invitations such as wedding or concerts, as well as informal gatherings. Dingbats, also known as printers characters or ornaments, are fonts that have shapes and symbols in the place of the alphabet and numeric characters.

There are many varieties: Pictograms, design elements, user interface elements, buttons, illustrations, and bullet lists. One of the main advantages is the ability to create various sizes and colors without having to do any special editing. Dingbat types of fonts are eminently useful and should be a part of your basic type library.

Monospaced fonts were created in order to meet the requirements of the typewriter. They are referred to as being non-proportional fonts, or fixed-width fonts. Meaning, that all of their characters occupy the same amount of horizontal space as opposed to variable width fonts that have different spacings and widths—they are proportionally spaced.

Some examples of these fonts are Courier and Monaco. They are not defined by their beauty, and are often more difficult to read than proportional fonts.

Monospaced types of fonts are always useful, though, in particular situations where you need things to line up. A Novelty font is considered to be any typeface that does not fall into one of the major categories of type — serif, sans serif, Old English, script or cursive. Often they are attention-grabbers and are used in headlines or call-outs and commonly define the personality of your piece.

Novelty types of fonts are fun to look for and collect, and there is a novel typeface for any mood or aesthetic you can think of. The possibilities are simply endless, as there are no rules to break when designing a novelty typeface. Generally comic typesetting has a very specific task in comparison to other typography.

With cartoons and speech bubbles, the font carries the mood of the strip and is not secondary to the overall design as most other typography is.

If the fonts are too small and hard to read, many potential customers won't bother to take a look. If you make them too large, your marketing efforts might look amateurish and awkward.

Most websites, email messages and print marketing materials use a mix of serif and non-serif fonts. These fonts are typically used in the body of your marketing message. Sans-serif fonts include Arial, Helvetica, Calibri and Verdana and are most often used in headlines. Size matters, too, when it comes to fonts.

Limit your font sizes to only two or three throughout the entire piece or website. For older audiences, consider using headlines in type size 16 to 24 points and the rest of the message in type size 12 to 16 point.

Use smaller font sizes with younger audiences. Headlines set at 12 to 18 point fonts and body type fonts between 10 to 12 points work well. The variety of Web browsers and email clients using different types of computers makes it difficult to ensure your messages display properly if you use unusual fonts.

Most Web browsers and email programs offer four common fonts you should stick to: Times, Arial, Helvetica and Verdana. When you send out an email marketing campaign or build a website, using these fonts means the reader sees the information the way you intended it to be seen.

Grab Fonts

If you vary from these fonts, the emails and website pages might look vastly different from what you intended, and may cause visitors to leave before they finish reading the page. The key to font selection for printed marketing materials is to use just two or three different fonts for the entire piece. If you use more than that, the material becomes difficult to read and looks unprofessional.

For example, marketing information about technology products requires a more straightforward font combination such as Arial for the headlines and Times for the body copy. But a gift basket company might use a cursive serif font such as Lucida Calligraphy for the headlines and an Arial font for the descriptions.

Be consistent when selecting font size and type for all of your marketing material. This helps create a unified look that builds basic trust with your prospective buyer.

Ideally, your website type should match your print materials so the reader feels the message is unified across all of your marketing efforts. Test your websites in various browsers and on different types of computers to make sure the fonts display the way you want them to.
